Introduction
Queensland's Industrial Relations Act 2016 offers a hybrid scheme: a classic 10-year entitlement plus a linear accrual and generous pro-rata triggers from year seven onward. Taking and directing leave
Queensland lets employees and employers agree to single-day absences. Employers may compel leave with three months' notice, but at least four weeks must be taken. Public holidays add an extra paid day.
Ordinary pay rules
Payment is whichever is higher: the ordinary pay for the last pay period before leave, or the average ordinary pay for the last five years. Casuals average hours across 12 months or five years. Commission-only staff average the better of 12 months or five years' earnings.

Example scenarios
Resignation at 8 years 6 months for domestic necessity
- Weeks: 8.5 × 0.8667 = 7.367.
- Hours: 7.367 × 38 = 279.9 hours.
Continuous service 17 years full-time
- Weeks: 8.667 + (7 × 0.8667) = 14.734 weeks.
- Hours: 14.734 × 38 = 559.9 hours.
Compliance note: Remember that casual loading is included in the ordinary rate of pay for LSL calculations.
