Annual Leave in the Northern Territory – What You Need to Know

Under the National Employment Standards (NES), Northern Territory employees are entitled to:

  • Full-time workers: 4 weeks (152 hours) of paid annual leave each year.
  • Part-time workers: Pro-rata accrual based on weekly hours worked.
  • Casual workers: No annual leave, but typically earn a 25% loading on their hourly rate.

Leave begins accruing from your first day and accumulates with every pay cycle. It can usually be taken at any time as agreed between you and your employer.

NT Leave Accrual Example

  • Full-time (38 hrs/week): ~2.923 hrs/week
  • Part-time (25 hrs/week): ~1.92 hrs/week

Leave Loading in the NT

If you're employed under certain awards or enterprise agreements (such as NTPS or hospitality awards), you're likely entitled to 17.5% leave loading.

Example:

  • Weekly wage: $1,200
  • Leave loading: $210
  • Total leave pay: $1,410 for the week

Who's Eligible for What in the NT?

  • Full-time employees: Standard 4 weeks paid annual leave
  • Part-time employees: Proportional leave based on average hours worked
  • Shift workers: May receive 5 weeks under certain conditions
  • Casuals: No leave, but compensated with a higher hourly rate

Don't forget: some NT employers offer additional "cultural leave" or "remote travel days" depending on your contract.
