Public holidays that fall during leave periods are not counted as annual leave days.
Annual Leave in Western Australia
In Western Australia, full-time and part-time employees are entitled to 4 weeks of paid annual leave per year of service. This is equivalent to 20 working days for a standard 5-day work week. Your annual leave accrues gradually throughout the year and rolls over if not used.
Leave Loading
Many employees in Western Australia receive a leave loading of 17.5% on top of their base pay rate when taking annual leave. However, this is not a statutory requirement and depends on your award, enterprise agreement, or employment contract.
Public Holidays
If a public holiday falls during your annual leave period, this day is not counted as annual leave but as a paid public holiday. View the complete list of Western Australia Public Holidays for 2025.
Unused Leave
Unused annual leave accumulates year after year and must be paid out when your employment ends. The payout will include any applicable leave loading.

Our WA Annual Leave Calculator is designed to help you get the most out of your entitlements, maximise your paid time off, and align your leave with the public holiday calendar.

Annual Leave in Western Australia – How It Works
WA workers fall under the national Fair Work framework, which means:
- Full-time employees receive 4 weeks (152 hours) of paid annual leave every year.
- Part-time employees accrue leave on a pro-rata basis.
- Casual employees don't earn paid leave but receive casual loading (usually 25%).
If you're a shift worker, or employed under a specific award or enterprise agreement, you might be entitled to more – such as 5 weeks of leave or additional leave loading.
WA Leave Accrual Example
- Full-time (38 hrs/week) → earns approx. 2.923 hours of leave/week
- Part-time (20 hrs/week) → accrues around 1.54 hrs/week
Annual leave accrues from your very first day and builds up with every pay cycle.
WA Leave Loading
In many cases, WA workers (particularly those under awards like the Hospitality Industry General Award or Retail Award) are entitled to 17.5% leave loading.
Example:
Weekly base salary: $1,100
Leave loading: $192.50
Total pay while on leave: $1,292.50
Check your contract or award to see if this applies to you.
Who's Entitled to What in WA?
- Full-time workers: 152 hours of paid leave annually
- Part-time workers: Receive leave proportional to their usual weekly hours
- Shift workers: Often eligible for 5 weeks, depending on rosters and award conditions
- Casuals: No paid leave, but receive higher hourly pay to compensate
Some enterprise agreements in WA industries (like mining, education, healthcare) may offer additional entitlements or accrual bonuses.
