Annual Leave in Queensland

In Queensland, annual leave entitlements are governed by the National Employment Standards (NES), which provide full-time employees with 4 weeks of paid annual leave per year. Part-time employees accrue leave on a pro-rata basis based on their hours worked.

Leave Loading

Many employees in Queensland are entitled to annual leave loading of 17.5% on top of their base rate of pay when taking annual leave. This entitlement typically comes from awards or enterprise agreements.

Public Holidays

If a public holiday falls during your annual leave period, it is not counted as annual leave. Instead, you receive payment for the public holiday at your base rate of pay. View the complete list of Queensland Public Holidays for 2025.

Unused Leave

Unused annual leave accumulates year to year and must be paid out when employment ends. Employers and employees can agree on cashing out annual leave, but employees must maintain a balance of at least 4 weeks after any cashing out.

QLD Annual Leave Calculator – Stretch Your Breaks in the Sunshine State (2025 Edition)

If you're working hard in Queensland, you deserve to relax smart. The QLD Annual Leave Calculator is your one-stop tool to figure out how much annual leave you've earned – and how to turn it into beach days, hinterland escapes or just some solid R&R at home.

From Brisbane to Cairns and everywhere in between, Queenslanders enjoy a slightly different public holiday schedule compared to other states – which is exactly why you should be planning your leave to take advantage of them. In this guide, we'll break down entitlements, accrual examples, public holiday hacks and tips to make the most of every hour you've earned.

Annual Leave Rules in Queensland

Like every state in Australia, QLD follows the National Employment Standards (NES), which means:

  • Full-time employees are entitled to 4 weeks (152 hours) of paid annual leave each year.
  • Part-time employees receive annual leave on a pro-rata basis.
  • Casual employees don't receive annual leave but are compensated via casual loading (usually 25%).

Annual leave starts accruing from your first day of employment, even during your probation period. It accrues progressively with each pay cycle and is calculated based on your ordinary hours of work.

QLD Leave Accrual Example

  • Full-time worker (38 hours/week): earns about 2.923 hours per week.
  • Part-time worker (24 hours/week): earns roughly 1.85 hours per week.

Over the year, that adds up to either 152 hours or 96 hours, respectively.

Leave Loading in Queensland

Many Queensland workers (particularly in hospitality, retail and government roles) receive 17.5% annual leave loading when taking time off.

Example:

Base weekly pay: $1,200

Leave loading: $210

Total leave pay for a week: $1,410

Who Gets Annual Leave in QLD?

Your entitlements depend on how you're employed:

  • Full-time workers: 4 weeks paid leave annually
  • Part-time workers: Leave accrued proportionally to hours worked
  • Shift workers: May be eligible for 5 weeks per year, depending on award or agreement
  • Casuals: No paid leave, but compensated through higher hourly pay

Remember: Your workplace's enterprise agreement or award might give you additional leave or better conditions – especially in sectors like education, emergency services and mining.
